In Markus Zusak’s, The Book Thief, the author explores using a symbolic accordian as a form of self expression.

3) Rudy’s accordion is competing. He always wants to compete for the medal at a track meet, or compete for attention in his large household.

Rosa’s color is red because she is mad and abusive most of the time.
Hans’ color is silver because even in a world that is dark, he doesn’t give up hope.
Max’s color is a dark yellow because he gives up hope when he goes to the concentration camp.

Point # 1) “Hello Stars.” (p.45) Liesel says hello to the stars when she first comes to the Hubermans’ home.
Point # 2) Max asks Liesel to tell him about the sky because he has to live closed off from the world around him.
Point # 3) Max said the stars burned his eyes the stars are Jewish stars the reality from around him burns him.
In Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, characters lose their means of self-expression and personal identity when they surrender to the Nazi Party.
Point 1) When Hans Hubermann is drafted into the Nazi Party, he leaves his accordion, his method of self-expression, behind.
Point 2) During the book burning on Hitler’s birthday, Nazi soldiers are described as “uniforms and signs,” not humans.
Point 3) Alex Steiner is described as an expressionless “wooden man” because he suppressed his own beliefs to join the Nazi Party.
Thesis:
In Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, the characters cannot express their own authentic emotions in society, so they find other ways to express themselves.

1. Hans Hubermann, Liesel’s foster father, expresses himself by playing his accordion.
2. Liesel lets her emotions out by stealing books and then reading them.
3. Max expresses himself silently by fighting for himself and what he believes in.

1) Hans Hubermann uses his accordion as a way of telling his story.
2) Max wrote the book The Standover Man to express his fear with Liesel.
3) Liesel uses her books to give her the means to convey her emotions.
In Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, the author uses the weather as a statement on the themes and feelings of the time.
The white, clean snow in the beginning represents Liesel’s purity and innocence that she still retains at the time.
At the time that Max is starting to feel better and things are looking good for the Hubermanns, Liesel sees a beautiful blue sky with a bright sun, but their is still a cloud, which is the shadow of fear.
Towards the end, when things are going wrong and bombs are being dropped, the skies are grey, cloudy and rainy.
